The University of Minnesota has an online roadway geometry design tool that was created to assist transportation students in this process. This tool, titled Roadway Online Application for Design (ROAD), allows students to design a roadway on a computer screen using a contour map in the background as reference. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently released the 7th edition of its “Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets” manual – commonly referred to as the “Green Book” – which is considered by many to be the pre-eminent industry guide to current highway and street design research and practices.
The Roadway Design Procedures and Details Manual is a principal source of information providing need to be referenced to supplement this manual. The design and detailing information available in general guidance on the policies and procedures that should be followed in the roadway design and plan development Size: 1MB. A well designed roadway lighting system will minimize glare by employing luminaires that have proper optical design (e.g., cutoff or full-cutoff). Disability glare should be limited to the recommended veiling luminance ratios included in the AASHTO (26) and IES(28) recommendations.
The Green Book is not a design manual but rather a series of recommended roadway design parameters. Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS), formerly known as Context Sensitive Design (CSD) is an evolving approach to developing and applying design standards that support local goals for community development and roadway character. The design speed is defined in the Green Book as “the selected speed used to determine the various geometric features of the roadway.” (AASHTO ) The Green Book either explicitly or implicitly uses the design speed concept to establish horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and cross-section design elements.
The optical system design of legacy high-intensity discharge (HID) luminaires was restricted to the lamp, refractor, and reflector design, which had limits in the distribution of the light, controls, and adaptability.
